Dr. Chaim Rozwaski

Rabbi Dr. Chaim Rozwaski

Rabbbi Chaim Z. Rozwaski was born in Zdienciol ( Zhetel ), Poland in 1933.

The town was occupied by Russia in 1939 and by Germany in July 1941.
A few weeks later the Germans killed his father Dovid and uncle Berl Maishe together with one hundred and seventeen other Jewish men of the town.
Following this his mother Bashke sent him to hide with a farmer friend of the family.
In the winter of that year all the Jews were forced into a Ghetto. Chaim moved with his mother and siblings into the Ghetto.
On April 30, 1942 the Ghetto was surrounded by German soldiers and militiamen of local and neighbouring countries. The Jews were forced into the market square and after a selection close to a thousand Jews including his mother Bashke and his  infant brother were killed and together with the other victims  buried in a mass grave. Chaim and his sisters Riva and Mere were saved by their father’s brother Shlaymeh and his wife Zelde. The survivors were forced to move into a Ghetto that was reduced in seize by circa half.

In August of 1942 the entire Ghetto was exterminated. Chaim together with his sisters cousin Shayel, the son of Shlayme and Zelde, menaged to escape thanks to the hard work and constant leadership of Shlayme, their uncle.
For the next three years the Rozwaski family lived with the Partisans and as a unit of civilians who hid with and among the Partisans in the Bialorussian forest known as Lipitchanskaya Pushtcha.

They were liberated by the Red Army late in the summer of 1944 and returned to their home town. ( out of some 1200 Jews in the forest only about 125 survived).
In the summer of 1945 the family Rozwaski moved to Łódź Poland.
Late in the Fall of that year Chaim left with the Zionist youth moved for Germany on the way to Palestine ( there was no Israel than).
After crossing the borders legally and illegally Chaim came to Germany. After wondering from camp he was reunited in 1946-7 with his family in  the DP camp in Ziggenheim.
With no Change of going to Palestine the family decided that Chaim and his older sister Riva should go to Canada because the Canadian Jewish Congress received permission to bring 1000 orphans to Canada. The Congress assumed total responsibility for the care of the children.
Chaim and Riva were settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, in 1948.
There the two, sister and brother, were placed with two elderly couples who lived in a duplex, thus enabling the two to remain next to each other.

In Winnipeg a new life began.
Chaim started school. He went to Public School  and Highschool and Hebrew School.
In Winning under Rabbi Dr. Abraham Kravitz, himself a survivor, Chaim Studied in the Talmud Torah and Maimonides College. Here he received his degree of a Madrich leader in Jewish education and a certificate in the excellence in the Hebrew Language.
In 1952 Chaim left Winnipeg to study at the Hebrew Theological College in Chicago.
At this college Chaim received the BHL degree (Bechelor of Hebrew Letters) and he was ordained ( S’micha) as a Rabbi.
At the same time Chaim studied at Roosevelt University where he received the degree of BA ( Bechelor of Art in English Literatur and Political Science).
After leaving Chicago in 1960 to serve as Rabbi of Sons of Abraham Synagogue Rabbi Rozwaski studied at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he received an MA ( Master ofScience, with a major in High School Administration and two minors one in aesthetics and the other one in Pre Socratic Philosophy.

Later Rabbi Rozwaski studied at Ner Israel Rabbinic Seminary and received an DTL a Doctor of Talmudic Law.
He has taught, Judaica  including Jewish Semiotics, at the Presidents University in Illinois, Humboldt University with Dr Peter von Der Osten Sacken, University of Potsdam, Moses Mendelsohn Institute, and The Technischer Universität, in Berlin.

Rabbi Rozwaski served in various congregations in The USA, UK and now in Berlin.
Rabbi Rozwaski served on many Rabbinic and clergy both as a member and officer.
He received many citations in appreciation of his public service. Rabbi Rozwaski was honoured with the KEY To The CITY of Peekskill NY.
He was invited two times to give the Opening Prayer ( INVOCATION ) in the United States House of Representatives.
Rabbi Dr. Chaim Rozwaski has published many articles, coedited  books and published books on Jewish subjects.

He is married to Roberta Koppel. They have children, grand children and great grand children. They live in Berlin.
